The filming of the forthcoming Princess Diana biopic, Diana, starring Naomi Watts has been followed scene by scene by snappers desperate to catch a glimpse of the silverscreen re-creation of the late royal’s most famous moments. Catching up with Ms Watts this week, The Cut grilled the blonde lookalike on the secrets behind her transformation.
"I had lots of help from professionals — obviously the wig, and I have a prosthetic nose," explains the King Kong star. But aside from expert help Naomi also says the Di look is all in the gaze; “A lot of it is about where the eyes are. She’s very much all about her eyes ... Looking out from under the eyebrow, and under the fringe."
As for the clothes, Watts suggests that shoulder pads and double-breasted jackets are essential. From stills of the film we’ve seen so far, shoulder pads do indeed feature, along with glamorous floor sweepers inspired by the iconic dresses worn by Diana designed by Gianni Versace.
As for the similarity between the Hollywood actress and the People’s Princess, Naomi reckons that while there are some similarities, there are also many differences. "I don't look that much like her in every angle, that's for sure. I'm five-foot-five as opposed to five-ten,” she says, "but I'm not trying to mimic. It's just an interpretation."
