Exclusive: Kristen McMenamy On Her Supermodel Daughter Lily’s Catwalk Debut

18 October 2012

Chanel! YSL! Yep, Lily McMenamy became one of the hottest new models around when she stormed the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week. But what was it like for her famous supermodel mum Kristen watching from the front row? A little uncomfortable it seems. ‘It would be hypocritical of me not to want her to be in modelling, as it’s been my dream my whole life and I got rejected by everyone,’ she told Grazia exclusively at the Tim Walker exhibition last night. ‘But I’d be lying if I didn’t say I didn’t like her walking. I didn’t like it at first, but I got used to it.’

Lily has said that her mum gave her quick catwalk lesson in her hotel before her appearance at the Hedi Slimane’s much-hyped show. But Kristen reckons her daughter might not have a future catwalk career. ‘There are two types of types of model who are successful. You either have to have exquisite beauty or drive. Hunger to pursue it every single day of your life and never give up and I don’t think Lilly has that. She’s interested in too many other things besides modelling, she loves Art history. I think that is her passion,’ she said.
Still, Lily couldn’t have a better mentor. Kristen, 45, was one of the biggest models of the 80’s and 90’s – and continues to wow on the catwalk, most recently taking the pride of place at the Chanel Couture show when she played the bride. Kristen says her long-held success is down to her determination. ‘It was the only thing I wanted to do and I wanted it so badly. I was like a bulldog, hanging on by my teeth. So I still jump up and down with excitement when I get booked for stuff, I will literally jump up and down around the room when I receive that call.’
Something tells us her daughter will have an equally bright future. ‘She had a wonderful time in Paris though and is in LA right now with Hedi Slimane… so who knows!’ We’ll certainly be watching….
