Wardrobe Tips from Jackie Dixon And Zara Martin From 'Show Me Your Wardrobe'

11 October 2012

If, like us you've long been a fan of fashion photographer Jackie Dixon's style blog then you'll be pleased to hear that she's teamed up with presenter Zara Martin to transform Show Me Your Wardrobe into a TV show for Sky Living. Sticking to the theme of blog, the pair were given the chance to riffle through the wardrobes of famous faces from chef Gizzi Erskine to actress Jaime Winstone. Let's find out what they learnt...

Which celebs were most up for showing you everything, good and bad
Zara - Stacey Solomon! She was so cool and open. We chilled in every room of her house and I even got on the back of her son’s giant dinosaur at one point. I really hope that doesn’t make it into the show.

Jackie - Everyone has been really open and welcoming. I love it when the celebs encourage me and Zara to try on their clothes, Jamie Winstone was great for this, as was Dawn Porter - she had me try on her onsie!

What was the most surprising item you discovered in a wardrobe while filming the series
Zara - That pretty much every celebrity wears Spanx. Sometimes 2 pairs.

Jackie - It's probably more how people organise their wardrobe than what's in them; Tess Daly organises her underwear by colour and surprisingly Stacey Soloman had nothing but neon underwear (I promise, we don't just look at people's underwear….)

Which celeb clothes did you most want to steal?
Zara - Jamie Winstone – I love her! I’d like to steal her clothes/ attitude towards life in general.

Jackie - So far I would say Tali Lennox (and not just because she has lots of hand-me-downs from her mum). She has an amazing sense of style, very unique and eclectic. It was really refreshing to meet someone so young with a real knack for styling pieces in a non-derivative way.

If you had an all access pass - whose wardrobe would you most like to raid

Zara - Noel Fielding. Mainly because I’d like to borrow some jackets.

Jackie - Dolly Parton! Can you imagine the fun and the stories she could tell. My favourite DP quote, "it take a lot of money to look this cheap". I love her!

What are your top tips for wardrobe organisation?
Zara - Hide the embarrassing stuff at the back?

Jackie - Keep it compartmentalised with the most worn items together.

How often should you have a clear out

Jackie- Never! No, that's not true. I do regular clear-outs and give all my stuff to Oxfam. If I haven't worn something in a year it's not allowed in my wardrobe.

Where do you like to shop?
Zara - Topshop, ASOS, Urban Outfitters, Opening Ceremony, Browns Focus and The Reformation.

Jackie - I love Miss Selfridge as the Creative Director, Yasmin Yusuf, has an amazing eye for vintage-inspired pieces and that aesthetic really appeals to me.

What do you think are the 10 essential items that you think every girl should have in their wardrobe, based on doing the show?

Zara - A Leather Jacket, a flattering pair of jeans, Statement heels, Trainers, LBD (hate myself for actually saying LBD!), a white shirt, a good hat, a Timeless handbag, a signature piece of jewelry (and if you don’t have that already you could probs find some by Zara Martin for Made @ ASOS) and something baggy for ‘fat days.’

Jackie - A good black or beige bra, seamless knickers (no-one likes a VPL) and some spanx, a well-fitting black tuxedo jacket, a pair of heels you can walk in, a pair of jeans you love and feel confident in, a pair of converse, a fail-safe cocktail dress, a good set of hangers (it makes all the difference for keeping a dress in shape), a Brora cashmere comb (I can't tell you how many jumpers I have saved and maintained this way), a luxe jumper and a great fancy dress outfit!

Buying the same thing in different colours, is it a yay or a nay?
Jackie - Definitely a yay! Why not, if you like it, it suits you etc, stick to the formulae that you feel comfortable with.

Show Me Your Wardrobe is on Sky Living on Mondays at 8.30pm.
