Alexa Chung’s natural habitat may be the hipster hangouts of East London and Williamsburg New York, but we think that the Brit style icon is hankering for more tropical climes. Our suspicions were initially aroused when the leggy presenter designed a palm tree print dress as part of her Madewell collection. The piece, which at first glance looks like your typical garden variety skater frock, is upon closer inspection covered in a spikey print which Alexa just can’t seem to get enough of. She even confessed in an interview about to promote the range: ‘I’m really obsessed with palm trees’. Yes you are Alexa. Yes you are!
Not content with the dress, Miss Chung also used the tropical print fabric to create a pair of silk daywear pyjamas and before long palm trees were creeping into other areas of her look. The palm tree necklace was inevitable, but Alexa needed more. She was spotted at New York Fashion Week in February last year rocking a seriously cute palm tree manicure. Palm trees at her fingertips, did the British Fashion Council ambassador need help we wondered?
Then Alexa went and threw us a curveball: pineapples. When she wasn’t drinking from pineapples at parties she was sticking pineapples brooches to everything from dresses to jumpers. Forget Granny Smiths and Kent Garden Strawberries – only prickly and exotic fruits would do.
Luckily for palm tree fans, Alexa hadn't ditched her original print altogether. At London Fashion Week SS13 she was spotted on the front row wearing a pair of Penelope Chilvers Dandy Slippers with gold embroidered palm tree motifs. But is Alexa's palm tree wardrobe a case of early adoration gone awry? Like when you announce aged eight that you just love owls and henceforth every birthday and Christmas receive owl figurines, owl packed lunch boxes and owl cushion covers until your bedroom begins to resemble a scene from The Animals of Farthing Wood. We'd guess that with Alexa's meticulous attention to styling, the decision to celebrate the palm tree is all her own!
