Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring Summer 2013 collection was an '80s dukebox turned up LOUD. The It-models were transformed into look-a-likeys as Gaultier ransacked the dusty wardrobes of the decade's chart-topping icons for his Paris Fashion Week show this weekend.
Karlie Kloss played Boy George with bright clashing patterns and a hat planted on top of those signature dreadlocks. Jessica Stam was trussed up as Madonna on her Blond Ambition tour rocking black mesh with bows in her hair and crosses round her neck. Jourdan Dunn was a convincing Sade in head to toe black with a sleek ponytail and hoop earrings. Then Jacko joined the procession in a red leather jacket and one glove.
A faux David Bowie, Grace Jones and Annie Lennox also joined the tribute band. What's more, a Jane Birkin version walked the runaway in sequined denim channeling 'Je T'Aime... Moi Non Plus'. Yep, the reference may be from the wrong decade, but if anyone can rewrite pop history and invite Ms Birkin to an '80s tribute party, it's JPG, non?
In fact, it was a caberet concert more than a fashion collection - each model giving their icon's signature pose under a disco ball to the sound of an '80s soundtrack. Amanda Lear also took to the catwalk in an electric pink sequin swimsuit with matching monster platforms. Genuis! And who rocked the FROW? A Kiss tribute band in face paint and silver bodysuits, of course.
