My Fashion Week: Make-up Artist Wendy Rowe On How To Be A Burberry Babe

Burberry girl, Cara Delevingne

I love Cara Delevingne. Actually, I need to ask her if she’s dating Harry Styles! She’s like a little sister to me. We’ve seen her grow up at Burberry and become who she is today. She’s normal; her beauty is natural and achievable. She’s got amazing skin too, and obviously a great brow, which makes her an easy canvas.

Beauty trends don’t change as quickly as clothes because there’s less to change – and at the end of the day, all women just want to look beautiful. A smoky eye and red lips will always be in fashion because they suit so many faces. For next summer though, they’ll also be pops of colour and golden skin. You want to look like you’ve been away for a couple of days and not a fortnight!

I’ve been doing the make-up for Burberry for 12 years, so I understand the look.  It’s about enhancing your features and looking effortless and modern.  Here are the basic steps to becoming a Burberry girl:

  1. Use a super light foundation, then push it all over your face as you would a moisturiser.
  2. Only black mascara and apply it lightly.
  3. Brush a taupe shadow into the eye socket, then trace the same colour along the lash line and meet both at the far corner and blend.

We only decide on the final make-up look the day before the show. We would have had a couple of trials and then Christopher and I will choose. It’s a massive technical challenge because Christopher wants something that doesn’t exist. Because I’ve worked with him for so long, I know how to get as close to his wishes as possible.

Backstage before the show I’m quite excitable. I do all the hard work first, and then I put my heels on so that I’m ready for the cameras. I get a bit stressed if I have girls waiting to be checked and I need to do interviews, but usually I’m just having a chuckle with Jourdan (Dunn). She’s got a good sense of humour and she loves the music too.
