It's surely a dream come true when the most famous woman in the world wears your designs. And if her sister wears your dress too? Well, that's a double whammy few designers have on their CV. But Dannii Minogue and Tabitha Somerset Webb, the duo behind Project D London, can now say they've dressed both Pippa AND Kate Middleton in their gorgeously girlie, flirty frocks.
The pair unveiled their chirpy Spring Summer 2013 collection in London last week and Grazia Daily was at the launch to see the blossom, horse and fairy-printed creations paraded around a plush room. 'I did NOT choose the playlist,' Dannii says of the Mary Poppins music (she prefers a filthy base line). 'Tabitha and I have completely different tastes in music and style.' Indeed, while Tabitha describes her sartorial leanings as 'rock fairy', Dannii's more edgy - or as Tabitha puts it, 'filthy'.
'I am a massive hoarder,' Tabitha admits - so much so that she's refused to let Dannii clear out her wardrobe. 'I constantly think I’m going to lose weight so I’ve got all my skinny jeans and tiny denim minis. Whereas this one [points to Dannii] is having a mid-life crisis. She's rocking the minis.'
Dannii admits she's recently developed a penchant for short dresses but still turns to the designers she's long loved. 'I just had a Valentino splurge in Florence. I blame the Prosecco!' Grazia Daily turns pea-green with envy. 'I also love Dolce & Gabbana because their dresses are sexy but ladylike.' And what of the high-street? 'I freakin’ love my new Acne knit in neon yellow' while Tabitha can't get enough of Rebecca Taylor's tweed and leather jacket.
Rebecca Taylor, you say? This leads us onto the notorious Middleton Effect. First Pippa was spotted wearing Project D London's Phoebe Bluebird dress to watch Andy Murray play at Wimbledon this summer. Then big sister Kate arrived at Brisbane Airport en route home from her Far East tour wearing the brand's flower-print Penelope dress. So how did the design duo feel to see Britain's most famous sisters wearing their creations?
'I get excited when anyone wears them,' Dannii says. 'Tabitha's mum wore the same dress as Pippa and looks hot!' Tabitha agrees, 'We're so flattered when anyone wears our dresses, it’s a real buzz.' Yep, that's all they're giving us. So who else do they dream of dressing? 'We want to do Michelle Obama and Jennifer Aniston,' Dannii says. 'We'd dress Jen in our long coral gown because she’s always black, black, black.' Oh, we'd LOVE to see that.
But before our time's up, we have to know: how does Dannii's hair always look so ruddy marvellous? From the blunt fringe and the major quiffs to sleek side-sweeps - is it magic or what? She laughs. 'No, it's all thanks to my hairdresser Christian who did all the X Factor styles. I get bored so I like to change it and if I didn't have Chris, I'd end up wearing berets or bad hairbands.' At this point, Tabitha lets drop that, in fact, Dannii likes to wear a - GASP - shower cap.
'I hate you!' Dannii squeals. And after the pair have controlled their giggling, she states: 'Sometimes a girl needs dirty hair for an up 'do, you know?' We actually do, Dannii - and if our hair's gonna look as glorious as yours, shower caps are our new best friend.
