Carine Roitfeld exclusive: ‘I hate fashion for little girls…’

She’s the ever-elusive, always-ahead-of-the-zeitgeist former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief… So what does she make of being a grandmother? Well for our biggest ever fashion issue (306 pages, people!) Grazia sent Polly Vernon to find out…

Carine’s daughter, the model and art director Julia Restoin-Roitfeld had just given birth to a little girl called Romy when they meet. ‘It’s very special to see your daughter become a mum, you know? Because you always think she’s a little girl; and not now, no, it’s a woman, in front of you; and she’s got a little girl, too. So it’s three generations of woman,’ she said of becoming a grandmother for the first time. ‘And I forget how… reassure… to have a baby on you; it makes me very quiet. /because it’s so small, and finally she’s so nice; and to relax, and… no phone, and you can’t talk, and you just….’ She inhales deeply. ‘At the same time… breathing with the baby.’

But whilst Romy’s birth has changed Carine’s attitude, it’s not going to change the way she dresses. ‘I just got my first Chanel bag! Can you imagine? I wait to be a grandma, to have a Chanel bag!’ she said of her latest purchases. And has she been buying Romy haute couture baby clothes? She shudders. ‘I hate fashion for little girls…’ Oh la la!
