Prabal Gurung On Dressing Kate Middleton: 'I Was As Surprised As Anyone!'

In between shows at New York Fashion Week, Grazia Daily caught up with designer of the moment Prabal Gurang. Aside from having just staged a beautiful collection at NYFW inspired by the work of Anish Kapoor, his name is on everyone's lips because the Duchess of Cambridge chose to wear one of his signature print dresses earlier in the week during her visit to Singapore as part of her nine-day tour of South East Asia and the South Pacific. With fans including Michelle Obama – who wore one of his creations to the 2011 Governors Dinner – Rooney Mara and Mila Kunis, this is one emerging designer with his star on the rise.

So how did he feel when he saw the pictures of Kate Middleton in his frock? “It was so surreal, I still can't believe it is actually happening to me! For a new designer to have Kate wearing one of my designs is major – and for it to happen during New York Fashion Week is even more extraordinary.”

“To me it speaks of how thoughtful a person the Duchess is – for her to have chosen me as I was born in Singapore for her state visit there is really humbling. There is no doubt that it will open doors for me and the response has already been so huge.”

“It's also great to see her making such a bold choice. Her normal style is beautifully simple, but to see her in such a strong fashion print and making a statement was amazing. It really suited her.”

And did Prabal have any idea the world’s most famous clothes-horse was about to set his twitter account on fire? “No! I really had no idea,” Prabal tells us, “Listen she didn’t text me or anything! I was as surprised as anyone. I can tell you it was such a jolt and such validation for everyone who has been working all the hours to make this collection happen. It's like the ultimate pat on the back!” Congrats Prabal!
