It may not seem cold enough to wrap up in winter warmers just yet, but Autumn/ Winter 2012's hottest coats are already in store. From cool pod coats to the latest military shape, make sure you're an early bird when it comes to snapping up the next season's top styles. Whether you're looking for an edgy statement coat with geo prints or a piece of classic masculine tailoring, we've rounded up the outerwear categories that you should be buying into.
Because quilted coats (as seen at Blumarine) and oversized mannish shapes are such key trends for winter, Grazia's Fashion Editor Sophie Ferguson Jones has filmed a little video to show you how to wear bulkier shape without losing all sense of your own proportion - with a belt. This was a trick used on the catwalk at Etro, Burberry Prorsum and Altuzarra and ensures you get double the wear out of your outerwear by allowing you to wear your coat nipped in at the waist or open when you want a fuller silhouette.
Sophie's top tips for buying a coat this season:
1. Mannish tailored coats will last for seasons to come so invest now.
2. Check the fabric content and be weary of too much merino as it smells like wet dog when it rains!
3. Keep in mind that as the weather turns you will need to wear chunkier knits underneath so don’t go for a shrunken fit.
4. Don’t just accessorise with belts. Try experimenting with brooches, knitwear and by attaching faux fur tippets.
