For a designer having Kate Middleton wear one of your creations must be a real coup, especially as everything she's spotted in tends to instantaneously fly off the shelves. But for the Duchess of Cambridge to opt to showcase a British designer's dress on two separate public occasions is surely the ultimate royal seal of approval. Kate first wore Serbian-born designer Roksanda Ilincic's lavender dress in Los Angeles during a tour of the US and Canada last year, but she recycled the ultra-flattering piece to attend a reception at the Royal Academy of Arts during the Olympics at the end of July.
Interviewed in yesterday's Telegraph, Roksanda said of Kate and her fashion choices: 'She is such a great ambassador for British fashion and a truly elegant woman.' The designer previously told Grazia 'It was such a pleasure to see her wearing her Peridot dress again. The dress is sophisticated yet has a softness as well, so I think it suits her understated style perfectly'. Although she won't say how the relationship came about, it's clear that for the Roksanda, who has also dressed high profile ladies including Michelle Obama, Emily Blunt and Emma Stone, seeing Kate Middleton endorsing her label is hugely exciting.
Kate is often photographed wearing high street brands such as Reiss, Whistles and Hobbs. While it's great to see the DOC wearing more affordable fashion, Christopher Kane for one previously expressed a wish for her to embrace catwalk creations. The Scottish designer said, 'It’s a shame she doesn’t wear more designers. I don’t really like the high street getting so much of the credit. I understand that there would be an array because you need to relate to so many people in the market, but she is a princess. If I were a princess, I’d be like, "Oh yeah, bring it on."'
Well Mr Kane got his wish when Kate wore one of his pieces to the Olympics 2012 Opening Ceremony in July. And Christopher Kane and Roksanda are not the only British designers the DoC has supported; she has previously been spotted in Erdem, Matthew Williamson and Jenny Packam among others. With London Fashion Week only two weeks away who knows what other fashion surprises she might have in store for us!
