Fashion Blogger Of The Week: Lorna Weightman Of Styleisle.ie Tells Us About Working In Fashion

30 August 2012 by

Irish blogger Lorna Weightman trained as an accountant before pursuing a career in fashion. As well as blogging for the Huffington Post and presenting fashion shows for stylenation.ie, she writes her own blog offering a personal perspective on everything from fashion news to must-have products. Find out more with our Q&A...

Grazia Daily: How long have you been blogging?

Lorna: I started my blog, www.styleisle.ie in 2009 and since then, I have redesigned it twice to fine tune its look and content.

Grazia Daily: What made you decide to start your blog?

Lorna: I had started a career as an accountant after Uni and found I just worked all the time and had no constant hobby, nothing to escape to after a hard day. I’m a very creative person and having been a model I always had a foot in the door to a career in fashion but put that to one side to study. And then it just happened: that compartment that I had stored away my fashionable aspirations, my sketches, my book ideas, my musings, well it had started to burst, frankly. And so the idea of a blog was born. Each night I could not get home quick enough to research blog posts. I stayed up way past my bedtime, resulting in the horrors of exhaustion the next day, but I was addicted (and still am!).

Grazia Daily: What’s been your highlight so far?

Lorna: There have been many but the most significant came in 2011 when I was able to leave the world of finance and embark on a career in fashion journalism. I started to write a weekly column in Ireland, my blog started to grow and grow with international traffic, I was making regular appearances on television and radio, I started to write and style for print media in the UK as well as blogging for the Huffington Post. I was just named as a rising star in fashion in a newspaper in Ireland this week, so the hard work is paying off!

Grazia Daily: Are there any particular perks of blogging?

Lorna: I am sent a lot of things, which I review on my blog and YouTube channel, and I am invited to some of the most amazing events and fashion shows. Press trips are great fun, but my eye is always on my work; looking for nice angles to take on my blog posts or shoots and tweeting constantly (@styleisleIRL). I am a twitter addict too and it is so important for engaging with readers!

Grazia Daily: Have you been to London Fashion Week?

Lorna: I am just preparing for my fifth trip to London Fashion Week! I love it, it’s hectic and exciting at the same time and over the last few years I have seen some of the most amazing shows such as Issa, John Rocha, PPQ, House of Holland and Felder Felder. Last year, I also filmed an online show which I present called stylenation, and I got to interview some amazing celebs like Olivia Palmero and Jamie Winstone!

Grazia Daily: Blog brag time: why should people read your blog?

Lorna: I like to think that I inject my personality into each and every post. I want my readers to feel like they can almost hear me reading the blog post to them! I am witty and see the fun side in everything, but that said I like to critique too. Blogging is about being individual to me and I convey fashion in a readable and quirky sort of way. I think my passion for all things style is quite apparent and I try to give advice as well as reviews of collections, beauty products and events.

Grazia Daily: What advice do you have for anyone starting a blog? What skills/ equipment do you need?

Lorna: Whether fashion is your thing or you like cooking, make sure your blog is about something you love. Readers are so perceptive and they know when you are speaking from your heart. Take time to find your own voice and stay true to it.

Grazia Daily: Which other fashion blogs do you love?

Lorna: I love blogs from all over the world. I am obsessed with Stockholm Streetstyle (who I go to for outfit inspiration), Susie Bubble, Bip Ling and The Blonde Salad. There are some amazing Irish bloggers too like Fash Mob, Angela Scanlon and Stitches Fabric and Soul. My blog roll can get quite long!
