Hot on the heels of news that Hedi Slimane is set to move the YSL design team to LA, we now hear news that disgraced designer John Galliano is set to take up residence in the City of Angels. According to the The Hollywood Reporter Galliano was seen lunching with former LVMH executive Katherine Ross on July 21, and, “The next day, Galliano, with longtime Parisian partner Alexis Roche, visited L.A. friends, dropping the hint that Roche would like to style celebs, and that they're looking for an L.A. apartment, since the designer has finished his long stint in recovery.”
While it’s true that Americans are known for their whole-hearted embrace of comebacks, and LA is becoming more and more a hub for creatives migrating West, the choice of the city suggests that Galliano will not be taking up any roles at European luxury labels – i.e. the widely rumored appointment at Schiaparelli.
So is Los Angeles about to become the new capital of cool? Joining the vibrant denim industry - all the big names from Jbrand, Hudson and 7 for AllMankind are based in the West Coast city – Galliano and Slimane will not be the only fashion-types making the move. Grazia’s Senior Contributing Editor, Andrew Holden tells us, “Everyone’s moving to LA. Especially photographers and stylists who have always lived in New York – it’s like a mass decampment. The beach, the better work/life balance, it’s a no-brainer really.”
While LA’s fashion week remains fragmented and small-scale in comparison with the main fashion centres, as a creative hub – with its galleries, eateries and proximity to Tinseltown – the city is booming. So Angelenos rejoice, your city is about to get a high fashion makeover!
