Karl Lagerfeld On Choupette Stealing His Limelight, Admiring Victoria Beckham & Kate Middleton Not Dressing Like A Mad Woman

25 July 2012 by

Should you curtsey when you meet Karl Lagerfeld? This was the question plaguing Grazia Daily's mind for a full two hours while we waited for King Kaiser to arrive at Selfridges yesterday. Answer: a little.

The white-haired designer was in our fair city to launch his two Karl collections ((Man + Woman), as well as an exclusive Olympics-inspired range, and his fashionably-late-ness allowed us ample time to admire the pop-up shop in the London mega store.

The super-monochrome space was packed with glitzy Karl collars and Karl iPhone cases as well as white gold medal tees and skin-tight jeans adorned with, yep, Karl's face. Karl's Krew, aka: impossibly hot men wearing blacker-than-black shades and holding Coca Cola (diet, obvs) lined a long black carpet. Yep, Selfridges has been Lager-fied.

Needless to say, Karl was well worth the wait. He arrived via escalators - a sight in itself - before striking a pose in front of a huge silhouette of his head. How did he look? Just as we'd imagined: be-gloved, be-ponytailed and with a pout to rival Victoria Beckham's. We wanted to know all about KL's recent work with VB so we grabbed five with the man himself (cue half-curtsey).

As well as discussing Queen Beckham's creations ('not bad'), Karl dished on actual Brit royalty, 'unpleasant' celebrity kids and, naturallement, his utter adoration for that 'huge powderpuff' Choupette, all said with the utmost seriousness. [NB: Karl's quotes to be read in a Euro-tastic accent].

Grazia Daily: The Karl collection has inspired so many people to dress like you. What do you think when you see Karl copycats?
Karl Lagerfeld: It's difficult for me to say because it's me. It's a strange feeling that I'd rather not analyse but I am very pleased.

Grazia Daily: We're very excited about the sports-themed collection…
Karl Lagerfeld: Yes, at the moment you have to be a little opportunistic because it's the thing of the moment. It's a great year for England with the anniversary of the Queen and the Olympics.

Grazia Daily: Speaking of the Queen, you seem to have a thing for our royal family…
Karl Lagerfeld: I think they're great. I even commented about them on French TV when they had a wedding or something like this.

Grazia Daily: So if you could dress Kate Middleton in anything, what would it be?
Karl Lagerfeld: She knows pretty well what to wear and what to do. She has a divine silhouette so she can wear anything. She has a sense of what's right for the moment because you can not dress like a mad woman in those situations.

Karl Lagerfeld On Choupette cat

Grazia Daily: By the way, we are obsessed with your cat!
Karl Lagerfeld: Everybody loves Choupette?!

Grazia Daily: Do you treat her like your own child?
Karl Lagerfeld: No, I don't compare. I never expected to like a cat because I've had dogs in the past but Choupette is fragile. She goes to the doctors every 10 days to check her weight and see if everything is okay. She even has a personal maid.

Grazia Daily: And she can use an iPad…
Karl Lagerfeld: Yes, she's very clever. Generally cats don't speak but when she wants something, she just sits in front of it. It's unbelievable.

Grazia Daily: Would you consider designing outfits for her?
Karl Lagerfeld: She hates anything attached to her body, not even her neck. Nothing! No, No. Her fur is so beautiful. She's like a huge powderpuff with blue eyes [that inspired an entire Chanel collection, no less]. People are stunned by her! I've done stories about her with Harper's Bazaar, V Magazine with Laticia Casta and for W Magazine. I think it's fun. Soon people will talk more about Choupette than about me!

Karl Lagerfeld Victoria Beckham Romeo.jpg

Grazia Daily: Impossible! We were very excited to see you shooting with Victoria Beckham in Paris yesterday...
Karl Lagerfeld: It was in the papers here, yes?

Grazia Daily: Yes, it was everywhere. How was it to work with her?
Karl Lagerfeld: I'm a great admirer of hers. She's a great example to tonnes of women; to have her four children, an incredible look and she's clever. I know her from her days as a Spice Girl. Her designs are not bad at all, they're good. She's totally unpretentious. She brought one of her sons with her [on the shoot] and he was the sweetest boy, because often children of celebrities aren't pleasant. This boy was perfection.

Grazia Daily: Romeo is particularly dapper.
Karl Lagerfeld: He's handsome, cute, polite. I know children of celebrities and I can tell you, you can keep them at home.

Grazia Daily: And have you met David?
Karl Lagerfeld: He didn't come with her but I have met him in New York. They're a lovely family. Everyone should look to Victoria.

Hear, hear. As we headed for the after-party to nibble on Karl macaroons with Daphne Guinness, Rosario Dawson and Juno Temple, we heard Monsieur Lagerfeld asking his people for the newspapers so he can see the VB story everyone's talking about. And, you know, to ensure his feline friend isn't stealing ALL the limelight.
