John Galliano Meets Anna Wintour AND Grace Coddington: What Is Going On?

La Wintour smiles at John Galliano as he joins her at the Ritz

Since Raf Simons was appointed to Dior and Hedi Slimane took up the Yves Saint Laurent (or should we say Saint Laurent Paris) position, the rumour mill has enjoyed a well-deserved break. That is… until this weekend! John Galliano was Twitpic’d lunching avec US Vogue’s edixtrix Anna Wintour at the ultra-posh Ritz restaurant L'Espadon in Paris. A lone-wolf Galliano sighting is enough to tickle the tabloids, but Galliano dining with She.Who.Rules.Everything? Well, now we’re interested. Sidenote: thank you Mr Internet for inventing Instagram.

Blurry, yes, but that's definitely Mr. Galliano and his plaits.

Galliano joined the editor in chief with her lovely daughter Bee Schaffer and whilst we can’t reveal what was discussed, we can see smiles and lots of them. This is hot on the heels of an inital Galliano/American Vogue mystery meeting from April when John met up with Wintour’s colleague and fellow fashion force, Grace Coddington in New York. On this occasion, fashion writer Dana Thomas was lucky enough to be within eaves-dropping distance to tweet "Sighting: John Galliano lunching with Grace Coddington in Manhattan today and telling her that he is 'thrilled' with....something!"

So… just WHAT is SOMETHING? And why would both Anna and Grace be involved? Will the shamed designer soon be sufficiently rehabilitated and redeemed to be welcomed back into the loving arms of fashion fold? We have three theories….

Theory One: Two words: Elsa Schiaparelli. Diego Della Valle, the owner of Tod's, Hogan and Roger Vivier, has recently acquired the fashion house and is set to revive it for 2012. The model/actress/director Farida Khelfa is currently steering the style-ship as a ‘muse’ of sorts, but they’ll no doubt need to appoint a chief designer very soon. If the label were to match up to its originator, the look would be avant-garde, challenging and very dramatic and theatrical. Hmm, sounds very much like JG could fit the bill, non? BUT, the rumours have been quickly dismissed as untrue…

Theory Two: LVMH will allow Galliano to return to his own eponymous line. New York Times’ Cathy Horyn stated last year that ‘casual discussions’ were occurring at LVMH towers and the possibility of Mr. Galliano returning to his own label wasn’t completely quashed.

Theory Three: Galliano will continue to lay low and stay under the radar. Maybe he could consider opening a very low-key atelier, and produce the odd dress here and there, a la Kate Mossy’s wedding gown…

So until some other bonkers idea fires up again (remember the one where John would collaborate with Topshop?) we’ll be watching very closely and keeping you posted.
