With Raf Simons slipping t-shirts into his Christian Dior couture collection and Hedi Slimane reworking the classic Saint Laurent Paris tux – the young designers are breathing life into historic fashion houses.
The two up-and-coming names have just revealed their first women’s collections for the houses. Raf designed Dior’s couture line and Hedi tackled YSL’s resort line. Both designers twisted perceptions of the brands, giving classic shapes super-cool, modern twists.
Raf revealed his first collection for Dior at Couture Fashion Week. It was a collection of tie die, sparkle (yay!), feathers, sheer fabrics and wearable form fitting t-shirts, trousers and jackets.
He said that he wanted it to "change the psychology of people who are interested in couture".
He told Tim Blanks: "I want to appeal to a person who has a different energy, a younger person, in mind, not necessarily in age. I want to approach couture with a new energy. I'm interested to see how people will pick up on it."
We won’t be able to catch a glimpse of Hedi’s Saint Laurent Paris women’s resort line until it arrives in store. The collection has been described by buyers as one of tailored cigarette trousers, pinstripes and neck-ties in black, white and grey – so far so classic YSL, right? Nope! The traditional pieces were joined by skinny jeans, hot pants, animal prints, silver and gold lame.
“It feels very YSL, but in a modern way,” one buyer told Women’s Wear Daily. “Hedi has a vision. It’s so directional.”
We cannot wait to see what these guys have in store for fashion over the next few years.
