Atelier Versace Couture: Second Season And More Versace-tastic Than Ever!

It was only in January of this year that Versace came back to the couture circuit with a very noticeable BANG! The made-to-measure atelier collection hadn’t been seen during a fashion week setting since 2004, and so you’d understand why Donatella Versace – even with such standing as the doyenne of evening bling – may have felt the nerves kick in. But it transpires that a second show is far scarier than the first - and last week we reported on the news of Donatella’s jitters ahead of today's couture catwalk. The designer’s anxiety stemmed from a concern about following in the legendary footsteps of her late brother and Versace founder, Gianni, but she needn’t have worried - critics across the couture FROW have labelled this as one of the most Versace Versace show they’ve seen in ages! Style.com reported that Christopher Kane (who heads up the Versus line) even suggested that Donatella herself should’ve hit the catwalk it was THAT Versace.

So then, this translates as a show that was unapologetically blingy, bright and flashy. The Ritz-Carlton setting (just in time before the hotel’s grande overhaul) housed an equally glamorous bunch: Jessica Alba in a black studded leather dress, Fan Bing Bing in a yellow cocktail dress, Milla Jovovich in a bondage LBD, M.I.A in head-to-toe clashing baroque and animalier prints from Gianni collections of the past and, erm, Pierce Brosnan. What was on the runway, you ask? Punchy power pastels, plenty of Angelina-friendly thigh-slitted billowing, shimmering gowns, the strappiest shoes and some very OTT wrestler belts. From far away, these dresses looked like regular Versace pret-a-porter – but get up close and the attention to detail and fabrication warrants a big couture stamp. Signature metal-work and studding was ramped up a notch, almost-invisible sequins covered prints and some dresses were even constructed out of pencil-thin buckled straps fastened together. Vvvvvery Versace indeed.
