Kristen Stewart On Balenciaga's New Fragrance Florabotanica And Style Icon Brigitte Bardot

We've been waiting a long time for this and at last, details of Kristen Stewart's latest role as the face of Balenciaga's new fragrance have arrived!

For starters, we know the new women’s scent is called Florabotanica (fancy!) and it's due out in September (hurrah!). The campaign, shot by Steven Meisel, has also landed and it sees a sullen Kristen posing with her hands in the pockets of a floral dress in true nonchalant stylee. Yep, there'll be no naked writhing on a beach or pouting between crisp white sheets for this one.

Grazia Daily admits to being somewhat surprised when it was first announced that K-Stew has become the French brand's new muse. In comparison to fellow young Hollywood players turned fashion darlings – we’re talking Elle Fanning for Rodarte and Mia Wasikowska for Miu Miu – the tomboy Twilight-er isn't exactly known for her high-fashion style or beauty prowess. She's often seen without a scrap of makeup and prefers to keep her brunette locks naturally tousled – the actress herself admits she's never been the type to spritz herself with fragrance.

'On a base level, the reason you want to wear a fragrance is because you want to smell attractive,' she tells WWD. 'That in itself is a pretty mature idea, especially considering the teenager I was. I was never the one wearing my mom’s perfume and trying to be sexy. I was like hanging out with my brothers and doing the opposite of that.' Yep, a true tomboy at heart who prefers trainers to heels and wears skinny jeans to a Hollywood wedding.

But thanks to the Balenciaga effect, the star's sartorial choices are becoming fashion-ier than ever (did you SEE her couture makeover in Vanity Fair?). She's even — shock horror! — started wearing perfume. 'There is something natural about it,' Stewart says of Florabotanica. 'It’s very alive. I think that as a young person wearing it — considering that I’ve never worn a scent — it kind of puts you on this level of, like, ‘Whoa, check me out.’ '

Indeed, she's clearly becoming more comfortable in front of the photographer's lens. 'I find when you do a really good photo shoot, you’ve unlocked something that you didn’t necessarily know you had in you,' the 22-year-old says. 'There are qualities that certain clothes, or certain environments and certain people, bring to the surface that can be surprising.'

One thing that has us surprised is Kristen's style icon. Might it be the equally nonchalant Emmaunelle Alt perhaps? Or maybe '80s rocker Joan Jett? Nope. 'I think the hottest chick that’s ever walked the earth is Brigitte Bardot,' she says. Although the actress admits that she couldn’t be more different from her. 'Even if I look up to them and think they’re really cool, I don’t think [they find their] way into my own sense of fashion.'

If there's anyone who can unlock those French fancy qualities in K-Stew, it's Nicolas Ghesquière. The Balenciaga designer confirms that this is a match made in heaven, saying that after watching Kristen in Panic Room, he thought, 'Wow, I would love to do something with her one day. She’s so Balenciaga.' He explains that, this time, the fragrance is about a narrative, 'kind of a fantasy' and Kristen is 'the perfect beauty' to represent it thanks to her gorgeous boyish charm. The fragrance has a modern twist with a slight edge that'll appeal to a younger audience (hello Twihards!). It certainly has us convinced.
