27 June 2012 by

In this week’s super-duper issue of Grazia we exclusively chat to the founder and creative director of Guess, Paul Marciano. Why? Well, it’s the American denim mega-brand’s 30th anniversary and we’ve rediscovered all of the fantastic Guess campaigns that have launched some of recent fashion history’s top supermodels – and practically ALL of the current Vcitoria’s Secret girls. Signing a contract for a Guess campaign is like a one-way ticket to major fashiondom. In the issue this week we grill Mr Marciano on why he was so keen on snapping up Paris Hilton back in the noughties, how he discovered Claudia Schiffer 24 years ago and the fact that many of the clothes in a Guess campaign aren’t even from the brand! A book will be launching in August that celebrates the past decade of infamous Guess campaign shoots, but there’s a wealth of brilliant imagery from the past that we can’t help but revisit and enjoy all over again. Scroll through the gallery above for some extra iconic images and their tales - and be sure to check out the magazine for the full scoop…

This was Naomi Campbell's big break in 1991. Shot on the beaches of Rio in Brazil by Ellen von Unwerth - Paul Marciano's number one go-to photographer.

Line Gost resembles Sophia Loren soo much in the 2007 Guess campaign shoot by Bryan Adams' that the original star receives fan mail requesting these pictures to be signed!

As mentioned below, bagging a Guess campaign these days is a fast track into being spotted by the Victoria's Secret crew. It's all that sassy bosom and figure hugging clothes - or lack thereof.... It certainly worked for Irina Shayk!

Before Paul Marciano discovered the late Anna Nicole Smith, she was called Vickie. He introduced her to a modelling agency and suggested the name change, because it sound better. Bet you didn't know that fact!

When French model and actress Laetitia Casta first walked into the Guess office for a casting Paul thought she was a lost child looking for her parents! Her 1993 Guess campaign launched a very succesful career.

Paul was an old friend of Paris Hilton's mother Cathy and was keen to show a different side to the heiress. Although it was a mammoth task getting her agents to say yes, those Guess campaigns gave her more fashion cred and upped her rep no end - enabling TV shows, fashion lines, catwalks appearances... you name it!

This is a shot from the original 1989 Ellen von Unwerth shoot of Claudia Schiffer. It was her first Guess campaign and this bodice became an iconic indicator of the Guess 'look'.... even if it wasn't from the brand itself!

Actress Amber Heard is the current Guess girl. According to Paul, she's got the perfect All-American looks to be one.

This shot of Claudia was taken in Greece, when Paul explains that the German supermodel really started to embody everything that a Guess girl is. Here she started an impromptu dance with some local guys!

Drew Barrymore - who Paul says was an absolute pleasure to work with - brought a new dimension to the Guess campaigns of 1993. This was shot by Wayne Maser in Los Angeles.
