We love a good fundraiser – and they don’t get more glam than this. Last night, Sarah Jessica Parker and Anna Wintour had the Obama’s round for dinner (as you do), and raised a whopping $2million at the event in SJP’s very own home. Oh yeah, did we mention the 50 guests paid $40,000 a ticket? Blimey.
With the hefty price tag, it’s not surprising that it was an A-list only crowd. Everyone from Michael Kors and Meryl Streep to Aretha Franklin and Solange Knowles were there, dressed to the nines and ready to hit up SJP’s newly decorated four-storey West Village apartment in New York – well, where else?
You can’t blame Sarah Jessica Parker for having a bit of a spruce up in the house before the event – let’s face it, it’s not everyday you have the President round for tea – but, though we can barely believe it, rumour has it Anna Wintour completely overhauled the décor. Tabloid paper Page Six cited a source as saying, ‘Anna was going crazy about the decorating. She was having a lot furniture removed and sending all of SJP’s tchotchkes upstairs…Some of the stuff in the house was shabby chic, and let’s just say, Anna wanted less shabby, and more chic.’ Anna? Vogue’s ‘ice maiden’, the editor we all love to fear and alleged inspiration for The Devil Wears Prada? Lies, surely.
We did hear that her supposed input – which appaz included floor to ceiling bookcases, wall-art and flowers-a-plenty – went down well though. And Mr President, the Obama certainly appeared to feel at home as he went straight into his opening speech with a Sex and The City joke, being at Carrie’s house and all (which incidentally more than resembles Carrie Bradshaw’s actual flat from the outside – weird, no?). Joking about his fundraising schedule, he told the packed room that he would put it in SATC terms – that tonight was his ‘date night’ with First Lady Michelle Obama. We love him a little bit for that.
And – oh, the outfits. As she greeted Mr O with a ‘hug and kiss’, SJP wowed her guests in a navy lace cocktail dress, a jewel-studded necklace and mahoosive diamond ring (what else?), and Wintour rocked a printed shift dress teamed with a gold necklace. Solange was in a beaut white silk dress and matchy blazer, whilst Chanel Iman wore an orange short-sleeved shift with matching strappy heels.
It wasn't without some criticism though. The video released to promote the fundraiser faced serious backlash from the Republican National Committee (RNC), who branded it inappropriate and met the campaign with a counter attack. The RNC reused the video for an advertisement of their own, mocking scenes showing Wintour fussing over her amazing job, and the 'wonderful people' she gets to meet as a result of it, by playing the video in full – alongside shocking unemployment statistics that were released the same day. A handful of protestors were also seen outside SJP's home last night, displaying plaquards reading 'The Devil Wears Prada And Supports Obama'. Ouch.
And shockingly, the event also caused outraged neighbours of SJP to turn to Twitter for help - after the excited crowds queing to get a glimpse of the President caused a wine shortage in the area.
But, despite the minor details, it certainly looked like quite a night. And we can’t help but respect SJP for putting on the dinner party to end all dinner parties – and making it a success. We only wish we’d been there ourselves… Better get saving for next time, hey?
