Back in 2010, Queen guitarist Brian May confirmed that Borat-actor Sacha Baron Cohen was set to play Freddie Mercury in a new biopic on the rock band, set to be released in 2014. And, now, it’s rumoured that pop princess Katy Perry is set to play Freddie’s girlfriend Mary Austin in the film, too!

Everyone is talking about Katy Perry. Having just released a teaser for the video of her latest single, 'Wide Awake' which shows a young girl flicking through a fairytale book featuring highlights from K-Pez' previous music videos like 'Firework' and 'Teenage Dream' before showing us a glimpse of the 'Wide Awake' video (is that a Prince Charming we spotted?), it seems that the starlet is looking to get into Hollywood's hearts too.

One of K-Pez's BFFs told the Mirror 'Katy would love to be in the film as she is such a huge fan, she would want to play Mary Austin ideally. Katy has a similar look to Mary and would be a brilliant foil to Sacha.'

Mary Austin was Freddie Mercury's ex-girlfriend/best friend who inherited most of his fortune after he died back in 1991, despite breakiing up in the 70s after Freddie Mercury admitted he was bisexual. The role will undoubtedbly be the lead female character going in the film and with remaining Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor on board to help with filming next year, we think Katy Perry would be an amazing job.

Katy Perry has famously called Freddie Mercury one of her biggest musical influences and admitted to almost getting a tattoo of Freddie Mercury's face on her back (she didn't!) so she's obviously a fan. Remember when she dressed up as Freddie Mercury for a Halloween party back in 2010? (see pic of her in a mustache above). We can't wait to hear whether this is true or not...
