We’ve been excited about the Daphne Guinness auction since the first moment we heard Daphers was putting some of her incredible wardrobe under the hammer. As well as Alexander McQueen, Daphne has chosen pieces from Christian Dior, Lacroix, Gareth Pugh, Christopher Kane and Balenciaga to sell, in order to help raise an estimated $100,000 for the Isabella Blow Foundation.
And now the catalogue is here! Featuring images of the pieces, along with price estimates (more of which below) and notes from a variety of the designers involved – Sarah Burton declares ‘I’m sure it will be a huge success. Love Sara, x’ and Gareth Pugh writes to Daphne that ‘there could be no better way to honour Isabella’s memory, and no better person to keep it safe’. Aw, bless. Daphne herself, meanwhile, illustrates some of her favourite items in the collection, citing a pair of amazing gold McQueen angel heels, by saying that the ‘angel heels are exquisite and remind her of Lee’s interest in the celestial’.
So – the important bits. Prices and sizes. Sizes are small, of course, not only in clothing but in footwear, too, with shoes coming in at a European 37. And the prices? Well, it depends on how the bidding goes, of course, but the reserve of some pieces like a dramatic Lacroix opera coat starts at £600. Which is almost affordable, when you think about it. And at the other end of the spectrum, there's an exquistite Alexander McQueen dress, which was made exclusively for Daphne in four colourways after she saw it in 2008, with an estimate of £15,000 - £20,000. Phewf.
