Who Likes Short Shorts? Jennifer Aniston, Cat Deeley and Alexa Chung Give Good Leg

In the frenzy to work all our new summer looks, who hasn’t - on occasion - fallen slightly foul of office appropriate dress codes? While it totally depends on the nature of your job, many of us now have such lax guidelines that it can hard to know the boundaries. However, nothing makes you seem less professional than making a serious sartorial slip-up - so how can we avoid the faux pas?

Summer shorts are perhaps the most likely to wrong-foot. By their nature shorts are (ahem) short, thus the potential to reveal a few too many inches of flesh is that much greater. Plus this season both high end boutiques and high street stores have been awash with properly skimpy styles – with knee length city shorts or chic mid-thighs effectively off the menu.

To a certain extent the point of shorts is to be slightly risqué – and if there isn’t a hint of sex appeal you can easily stray into tourist territory (think khakis cut off with baggy bums and big pockets). However, unless you are earning your daily bread as a glamour model, visible bum and inner thigh areas are ALWAYS inappropriate.

In regards to the plethora of lingerie inspired shorts available right now with silk running shorts (see Topshop) and lace edged numbers up for grabs, we offer soem words of warning. If you are keen to plump for this style in the office, you need to be careful what you pair them with. A crop top is a no. Ditto any cleavage revealing styles. Instead consider boyish tees, silk blouses (for an on-trend pyjama look) or a crisp white shirt. And flat sandals or modest block heels are much more likely to have your colleagues coveting your summer style rather than inspiring surreptitious titters.
