Stretching from America’s East to West Coast the legendary Gumball 3000 rally got underway at the weekend. From the starting line in NYC, more than 100 of the world’s most glitzy supercars (along with some serious classics) will travel the 3,000 mile distance to the finishing post in LA, stopping off in Toronto (Niagra Falls), Indianpolis, Kansas City, Santa Fe and Las Vegas. Now while we aren’t usually prone to petrolhead passions, this event bringing together music, film, art, parties and some seriously chic drivers has us dreaming of life behind the wheel – very Kristen Stewart in On the Road and Prada's Americana S/S 2012 collection. In the US the rally is seriously big deal and is followed by live reports on MTV, CNN and Fox as well as making the covers of titles like Vanity Fair.
Luckily Grazia has a Gumball correspondent in the shape of social shopping maestro and Motilo (the award winning online shopping site where you can shop in real time with your friends) founder, the ever-glamorous Sofia Barattieri. Teaming up with Motilo’s Creative Director Mai Ikuzawa, who is also the daughter of iconic F1 driver Testu Ikuzawa, Barattieri has been snapping away to give us an exclusive insider look into the jetset rally - move over The Fast & The Furious, here come the fashion crusiers!
"What can I say about our Chevy? She's big, she's temperamental, she's beautiful but she likes to break down... a lot. Day one started off with a bang as we left Times Square in New York. We already had a taste of the wild characters that would be joining us on this adventure but seeing some of the tricked out cars was an experience in itself.
We started the rally and the noise was deafening, we immediately lost our GPS and it was hot, hot, hot. Too hot for our Chevy, it seems, because an explosion in the engine had us in a pit stop before our first check point. Mai and I took to the mall for shopping and a pedicure (we are fashion girls, after all) then spent the night at a petrol station surrounded by locals eager to help.
In our effort to have America style us for our trip, our first look totalled in at $97 - a few alterations later and we were back on the road. Another explosion on the highway prompted a run in with the police because our tyre exploded!
We were rescued once again and got a real taste of America; from local food (Hello, Dennys!) to seeing a gun shop on every corner - and we got a real sense of what real Americans wear, see above left. And our first celeb spot - Queen of the Gumball - Eve, who we keep running into to at our pitstops -her boyfriend Maximillion Cooper is the founder of the rally.
At long last, five breakdowns later, we made it to Indianapolis for the Indy 500 where we and after watching Dario Franchitti take home the cup, we set off to St. Louis for the next chapter in our adventure."
