Choosing what to wear on the red carpet is pretty tricky at the best of times but the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (aka: the Met Ball) is the Fashion World’s equivalent of the Oscar Awards, so no pressure starlets! This year the theme of the night was Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations so the style stakes were high with many of the attendees pushing the fashion boundaries to gob-smacking effect. We love a style maverick here at Grazia HQ but those who kept it simple and chic championed too. So having had a browse through our bumper gallery of dresses, it's time to check out the winners, the losers and the damn right bonkers. Let the Met Ball Fashion Hit List begin!
☆ The winners ☆
Carey Mulligan in Prada: Looking sultry in sci-fi Prada, Carey Mulligan nails her red-carpet look with this metallic fish scale number. Fab makeup and hair too!
Gwyneth Paltrow in Prada: Oh Gwynnie, how fabulous are your pins and even more fabulous that you have finally decided to show them off in all their glory with this Prada stunner!
Emma Stone in Lanvin: Forget Andrew Garfield - this could possibly be the cutest couple ever! Emma looks so sweet in this red Lanvin number and Alber Elbaz, there are no words for how much we adore you.
Camilla Belle in Ralph Lauren: The actress always manages to wow us whilst looking effortless. How DOES she do it? This classic metallic gown is styled to perfection with a Hollywood glam side-parted up 'do and dark sultry makeup.
Karolina Kurkova in Rachel Zoe: When we saw this shot of the supermodel, old-school Hollywood film sirens sprang to mind as well as Kate Moss in THAT turban. Yep, this is a daring look but it totally paid off.
Kate Bosworth in Prada: Feathers were the detailing of the night (see Beyonce and Diane Kruger) and Kate’s two-tone flapper dress is just divine. Her effortless hair together with striking makeup make this possibly the look of the night. Do you agree?
Lily Collins in Valentino: We just love to see a young starlet dressing her age so we're super chuffed to see the gorgeous Lily in such a fresh and girlie gown and the plaited hair is the perfect finish.
Amber Heard in Zac Posen: Super hot actress Amber doesn’t get much red carpet attention around these parts but photographed here with her designer pal, we think she deserves a big thumbs up. It's such a classic and feminine outfit choice, no?
Jessica Alba in Michael Kors: Last but not least, we bring you Lady Alba. It’s not often that the drop-dead-gorgeous actress is missed off a best dressed list and sporting this gorgeous Grecian goddess gown, she nails it once again.
☆ The Ones That Got Away ☆
Sarah Jessica Parker in Valentino: We love SJP's swooshy style but we do wonder if, as the years go by, such a whimsical gown may just be a little too *ahem* young for her. There we said it.
Rihanna in Tom Ford: The source of our weekly style inspiration, Ri-Ri toned down her usual attention-grabbing approach with this croc print maxi dress. Very sophisticated, very nice, but we wanted to be wowed!
Beyonce in Givenchy Couture by Riccardo Tisci: Beautiful Bey is forever loved by us Graziettes, but to be honest, we were a little disappointed by her predictable combo of figure-hugging, sheer, embellishment and feathers *sad face*
Diane Kruger in Prada: More purple feathers?! Diane’s dramatic frock is certainly breathtaking but it's divided opinion on the Fashion Desk. That dress must have weighed a ton for the usually minimalist star and it make her look MUCH wider than she actually is - or could this mean she's having a little Pacey baby? Please say it's so!
Alexa Chung in Marc Jacobs: Now this is a Style Hunter-worthy outfit for the streets of Fashion Week but on the Met Ball red carpet, dear? Alexa, we think not.
Leighton Meester in Marchesa: Matching your hair and skin tone to your outfit is always a no-no and Ms Meester did just that with her fairytale gown. We’re not convinced the dark lippy is enough to detract from all that exploding chiffon.
Jessica Biel in Prada: We’re super chuffed Jessica and Justin have (finally) decided to tie the knot, but we do hope it doesn’t mean we have seen the back of Jess’ slightly more sexy outfits. We can’t help but feel the midi hemline of this dress and that heavy fringe are a tad - dare we say? - ageing.
Chloe Sevigny In Miu Miu: A magnificent masterpiece this may be and Chloe is always, err, unique but the styling (hello bra and pants!) is a tad too wacky for our liking. We can't help liking those clog-like Miu Miu booties though...
☆ The Down Right Bonkers ☆
Coco Rocha in Givenchy: The stunning supermodel looks don’t give anyone the authority to attend what is basically the equivalent of the Fashion Oscars in this canary yellow suit with pink hair extensions. Yikes!
Kirsten Dunst in Rodarte: The star has featured many a time on our best dressed lists but this jacket and skirt suit just have us perplexed.
Florence Welch in Alexander McQueen: Appreciating Sarah Burton’s intricate designs goes without saying, but this three-tiered, sea sponge inspired dress just takes the jimmy riddle.
Jessica Chastain in Louis Vuitton: It appears someone forgot to steam Jessica’s LV dress before she hit the red carpet. Someone sack the stylist.
Christina Ricci in Thakoon: This statement dress was a bold choice that nearly pays off. Striking a pose from behind the oversize cream bow is pretty amazing, but when Christina attempts to move is this number it all starts to go wrong!
But what say you? Tell us your verdict in the box below...
