Rihanna Goes From Ghetto To Glam In Marchesa At Time's 100 Most Influential Gala

25 April 2012 by

If anyone knows how to surprise us, it's Rihanna. The last time we were trilling about her red carpet swishes, she was wowing the world in a set of silky Pucci pyjamas at the 'Battleship' world premiere in Tokyo. Then we saw her rocking her signature attitude-y style in an array of retro T-shirts that just got us buzzing about '80s cool. And most recently she was giving the crowd at Coachella an eye-full in raunchy butt-grazing, stud-covered shorts. So nothing could have prepared us for her super-duper glam turn at Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World Gala last night.

Ri-Ri arrived at the swanky shindig at the Lincoln Center in New York City wearing a jaw-droppingly gorgeous prom dress with a strapless structured bodice and voluminous skirt. How pretty! The frock comes courtesy of label-for-glossy-lovers Marchesa and is in a deliciously sumptuous fuchsia tone that'd more likely attract Sarah Jessica Parker types. The songstress topped off the ladylike look with a pair of crystallised-heeled black Christian Louboutins to match her tumbling Hollywood curls, a dark berry lip and dazzling diamond earrings that'd put Elizabeth Taylor to shame. She's more Disney Princess pretty than good-girl-gone-bad minxy, no?

Granted, the tough girl ingredients were still in the mix — note the grungey undercut, eye-wincingly sharp talons and collarbone tattoo — but the edginess was toned down to create an altogether demure vibe. Yep, Rihanna looking demure. Whoda thunk it? We reckon it maaay have something to do with her mom being her date (how cute).

This isn't the first time she's gone girlie, of course. Cast your minds back to this time last year when Ri-Ri was frolicking about in the sunset wearing floral skirts and lacy crop tops with a frothy red barnet for the 'Only Girl' video.

So is this Dita Von Teese-esque approach here to stay? Being the style chameleon that she is, we sincerely doubt it.
