How To Do Minimalism Like Leelee Sobieski, Rihanna and Dree Hemingway

24 April 2012 by

This season is a tale of two very different trend halves. On the one hand you’ll find crazy prints, over-embellishment, layers-layered-upon-layers and more jazzy jewellery than you can shake a Lady Gaga headdress at. Just think of Cheryl Cole’s clashing leopard and tropical get-up for her new music vid or Florence Welch’s continued double-print mania. The more-is-more approach is happening everywhere, and proved by two of LFW’s top dogs, Mary Katrantzou and Peter Pilotto’s vibrant prints hitting more red carpets than pedicures - everyone from Scarlett Johannson to Jennifer Lopez are in the fan club.

Dree Hemingway, Rihanna and Chanel Iman have all joined the minimalist army!

But there’s a strong contingent of fashion fighters in the opposing corner of this sartorial boxing ring – a team of major minimalists, set to conquer the style globe with their sharply cut lines, restricted colour palette and achingly chic (and totally understated) accessories. And they’re led by our most coo’ed over new style crush –28 year old American actress Leelee Sobieski. She’s a conveyor belt of pared back coolness – bringing out one brilliantly minimalist outfit after another. Bam! White maxi shirt dress from Jil Sander. Bam! Amazing LBD from The Row. Triple BAM! A series of such chicly put-together jean-based outfits that you’ll never look at denim in the same scruffy way again. It’s not boring, it’s brilliant. So much so that some of the craziest dressers of the A-list world are coming round to the idea. Heck! Even Rihanna has realised it’s not as hard as it sounds. And with the news that Jil Sander – one of the original purists of the ‘90s – will be returning to her namesake brand for A/W’12, we reckon there will be a lot more minimalism to come….

So keep it simple, not clinical, and be sure to add in a piece or two with a twist – whether that’s a jolt of colour, metallic finish or statement (but simple) jewellery. There are some particularly great minimalist sandals kicking about the high street. Here are our top pieces to nail the look today!
