TOWIE’s Arg, Shane Warne, Gary Barlow: It’s The Rise of The Man-Over!

We’ve all seen the pictures this week of TOWIE’s James argent, aka Arg, and his brand new look – comprising a sleek new physique, a sharp wardrobe and astonishingly white teeth. But here at Grazia Daily we've been wondering if Arg’s reinvention might just be the very tip of an iceberg of male makeovers? So, with that in mind we bring you: The Rise of The Man-Over.

Broadly speaking, there are two types of man-over, which for the purposes of this article we shall know as ‘The Buff’ and ‘The Gruff’. Exponents of the former, like Arg, include the well-preened likes of Shane Warne, Justin Theroux and newly thin Perez Hilton. Key components of ‘The Buff’ include weight loss, appropriation of an intense tan, and the sudden appearance of a set of blindingly white teeth.

The other (arguably preferable) type of man-over is ‘The Gruff’, popularised by Gary Barlow and Hugh Laurie. Here, the key to hotness is a full set of crow’s feet, a good wardrobe and some artfully trimmed stubble. In short: it’s about ageing into your looks, wearing a hot suit and growing a beard.

Whilst the Man-Over is not a new phenomenon, there do seem to be an increasing number of high-profile men who are set on reinventing their appearance. But does the Man-Over only apply to performers, sportsmen and people from Essex? Well, no. According to Lisa Littlehales, Lead Nurse Counsellor at cosmetic surgery giant, The Harley Medical Group, ‘recent figures certainly show that there is a growing trend amongst men to achieve a more groomed appearance’ and alongside the most popular surgical procedures (rhinoplasty and otoplasty – aka ear jobs) ‘laser Hair Removal remains the most popular non-surgical treatment for this age group, with a 12% rise year-on-year.’

Just this week, Fake Bake launched their brand new ‘Sport Tan’ which, though technically unisex, is a clear response to the ever-growing male market, with its non-greasy finish and masculine bottle. It’s not just cosmetic surgery and teeth whitening that have seen boom times, either, with figures for men’s shopping habits showing an increase in not only the quantity of clothing men are buying, but also the price points at which they’re spending. Mr Porter, the brilliant men’s luxury fashion store from Net-A-Porter has boomed in the fourteen months since its inception, and now boasts eleven million monthly page views and five thousand new customers every month. Phewf.

So what does the future hold for the male makeover business? Well, if the above figures are anything to go by, before the next Olympics come round we’ll all be lasered smooth, immaculately-dressed and porcelain veneered to perfection. Girls, watch your backs. We’re coming after your concealer, and we’re not afraid to use it.
