Dior Announce Former Jil Sander's Creative Director Raf Simons as John Galliano's Successor

Well, the wait is finally over! Dior have just announced Raf Simons as the new Artistic Director of the Parisian fashion house on Wednesday. He will succeed John Galliano whose anti-semitic outburst in a bar last year, rocked the fashion world leading to his dismissal. It’s fair to say we’ve been on tenterhooks ever since as the industry speculated over the new appointment. LVMH family member Marc Jacobs and Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz were in the running for the coveted position but Raf’s shock departure from his position as Creative Director at Jil Sanders during Milan Fashion Week saw him shoot straight to the top of the list of potential candidates.

During his 7 year tenure Jil Sander, Raf was most well known for his minimalist designs but having been heavily inspired by Dior, we can see why he is a good fit for the brand. As you might expect, Raf is clearly delighted with the decision and in an interview with the New York Times said, ‘'The first time I heard about the Dior position, I thought "this feels right."'

A potentially daunting task, his first collection for Dior is planned for the haute couture shows in July. He told the New York Times, “I’m not one of those people who would say, ‘Ah, couture makes no sense anymore because everything today should be accessible.’ Clearly there is an interest from people in this level of creativity.” Indeed there is Mr Simons and we, along with the rest of the fashion world, can’t wait to see your take on it…
