Kate Winslet and Rose McGowan Work The Optical Illusion Trend: Eek or Chic?

When pictures of Rose McGowan out and about in Paris hit our desks this morning, we thought we must be seeing things. While the 38-year old actress is known for her risqué sense of style (especially back when she was dating Marilyn Manson), wearing a revealing frock on the red carpet is nothing compared to strolling around topless in broad daylight. Quelle horreur we cried, the poor girl’s only gone and forgotten her top!

It was only after our morning coffee kicked in (and the double vision subsided) that we realised our mistake; not only was she wearing a top, but it was MEANT TO LOOK LIKE THAT. In fact, her cream and black top was designed to suggest she was wearing a pair of braces, and nothing else.

Suddenly, the office was divided as we debated the pros and cons of the growing optical illusion trend that’s recently become a firm favourite with leading ladies. Stella McCartney’s body hugging design became a hit when we realised that the super flattering panels meant we could have our cake and eat it too… that is, eat too much cake and still look uber-fabulous. But while we love the idea of tricking the eye into seeing a perfect hourglass silhouette, this is a trend that should be approached with caution.

Lots of celebs, including the very lovely (and gorgeously curvy) Kate Winslet, have worn the trend with stunning results. But others, including poor Rose McGowan, have missed the mark, exposing themselves (ahem) to ridicule. We’d love to know who you think has worn it best; click through the gallery to pick your favourite!
