Its one of the most packed-out and talked about shows every season at London Fashion Week but with the stellar front row (which in February included guest of honor Lana Del Rey- more of that later) and the supermodels whooshing past its hard to get a close enough look at the Mulberry bags we’ll undoubtedly be coveting all season long, which is why our trip to Mulberry HQ this week for their Autumn/Winter ’12 ‘press day’ (a chance for fashion journalists to see the collection in all its glorious entirety up-close-and-personal) was too good an opportunity to miss!
First thing’s first- the Del Rey bag! Inspired by the American singing sensation Lana Del Rey, this was our first proper look at the super chic top handle bag that caused a frenzy during LFW. And rightly so considering the previous bag Mulberry named after a famous woman was the Alexa- the satchel bag that went down in handbag history!
Mulberry’s Creative Director Emma Hill is said to have been captivated by the songstress when they met last year following the release of Ms. Del Rey’s Video Games single and video, “I love Lana’s nostalgic references to bygone glamour and the fact that her look is retrospective yet so modern” explains Emma.
And although it doesn’t launch until May the Del Rey bag already has a waiting list that boasts over 1,000 names!
Arriving first in brown, black and petrol leathers, four super luxe versions of the Del Rey bag from the Catwalk Collection will then launch in August- think gold metallic and sparkling croc print featuring fabulous tassels, fur print and black ostrich plus a rather special turtle lock!
But its not just the Del Rey getting our pulses racing…. we’re also mad about the super cool Bryn satchel- the perfect day bag in the smaller size and fabulous carry-all in the large.
The gorgeous snake print fold-over Hetty shoulder clutch bag, which you can also carry as a tote!
The brilliant brushed out shearling and embossed rubber blue Maisie bag.
Not to mention the multi-colour tweed new Lily shoulder bag with double chain strap.
And last but by no means least the Aztec bead and studded Zig-Zag bag.
Plus in honor of this year of Great Britishness (the London Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee- incase you need reminding) Mulberry has created a mini collection based on three of the brands iconic designs- the Bayswater, Lily and Pouch, all available from June in classic natural oak leather and featuring an extra special Postman’s Lock with an engraved Union Jack, cor blimey!
