One of the most treasured and closely guarded things a designer brand can own is their signature logo. Why? Well, logos separate those in the know from those who, well, don't know. Not to mention the way it can separate genuine products from the not so genuine. Double interlocked Gs? That'll be Gucci. Prism Y’s? Goyard. And a quatrefoil? Louis Vuitton, OBVS.
But the WAG-related logo boom in the early noughties caused a bit of a flogging-dead-fashion-horse situation and so many awful copies were produced that the monogram bag tipped over into naffdom. It’s had a recent recovery (and we’re actually quite keen on the subtle monogram pieces once more) and the quality and craftsmanship behind these beautiful bags is back to the fore.
But, we’ve noticed there’s another - even more ingenious - way that designers are making sure insiders recognise their goods from even the quickest glance. The 2012 logo replacement strategy? Ditch the symbols and get on the statement print train.
