Everyone's Wearing Prabal Gurung: Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Lawrence, Michelle Obama!

29 March 2012 by

Prabal Gurung is the hot eveningwear label of choice right now, for everyone from Leighton Meester to Michelle Obama. And in the last few weeks, the New York-based designer has been racking up more red carpet hits than we can keep up with…well, almost. And it’s easy to see why!

Prabal's incredible use of colour and standout silhouettes make a modern and exciting choice for up-and-coming actresses like Jennifer Lawrence and Shailene Woodley who are out to wow the fash pack. But it's not often that a designer - especially with a label as young as this - is so irresistible to half of Hollywood, as well as America’s First Lady!

However, Mr Gurung has been perfecting his craft way longer than the three years since his label launched at New York Fashion Week. After graduating at Parsons School of Design (during which time he also interned at Donna Karan, no less), Prabal worked at Cynthia Rowley where he designed for three years before becoming design director at Bill Blass for a further five. Then in February 2009, the Singapore-born designer began creating under his own name. And it wasn’t long before he was turning the heads of industry bigwigs, earning himself one of the sought after design studios at the CFDA Fashion Incubator for 2010-2012 - an incredible platform for emerging talents, not to mention his jam-packed show being one of NYFW’s hottest tickets.

And it seems the entire A-list world is in agreement - we’re talking Michelle Obama, Zoe Saldana, Amanda Seyfried, Carey Mulligan to name but a few. Prabal’s mouth-watering combination of expert tailoring, beautiful dressmaking and entrancing print work have made his clobber a red carpet failsafe and it’s hard to ignore the fact that Sarah Jessica Parker has stepped out in more PG outfits in the last year than she has any other designer. We have to say, SJP, if we could, we so would too!
