Looks from Zandra Rhodes retrospective catwalk show in Paris
As everyone knows, fashion is a ruthless business and not many designers manage to last the distance when it comes to their careers – or at least not with their own label that is. All the more remarkable then, that Zandra Rhodes is still designing collections for a new generation of fashion fans after all these years – since her first collection in 1969!

At Paris fashion week just gone, she was the proud recipient of a retrospective catwalk show – featuring looks from various collections from down the years as well as three VERY jaunty looks from A/W ’12, a vividly colourful (of course) collection but very structural. We just LOVE the jumbo-print coats and think they look quite Marc Jacobs, if anyone wants our opinion.
Not only that, but to celebrate the successful retrospective, Zandra decided to hold a dinner party for bloggers and journalists – in her penthouse flat! And guess who was doing the cooking? We know! *squeals* On the menu were Greek lemon egg soup (delish) followed by shepherds pie or pommes dauphinoise for the vegetarians. Zandra dished everyone up herself like an extremely glamorous, if slightly eccentric pink-haired dinner lady.
The big attraction of course was getting the chance to nosy around Zandra’s amazingly glamorous apartment - at the roof of the eye-catching building designed by Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, which – at a level nearer the ground floor – also houses the Fashion and Textiles Museum that Zandra founded. Beeyootifull. As you might have guessed, the interior is NOT short of a spot of colour, but is festooned with rainbows, pink, and mirrored-tiled original artworks by her long standing friend and collaborator, artist Andrew Logan, and many more.
Before dinner we perused some of her magnificent archive hung on rails and mannequins, and after dinner we settled down for a bit of our favourite pastime – GOSSIP! We wanted to know if Zandra was looking forward to the Diamond Jubilee; ‘Oh yes, I’m a great royalist. I’m an ardent supporter of the Queen’ as well as revealing that she had a whale of a time celebrating the previous Jubilees with Divine, the famous American drag queen (maybe google her?). Apparently, Zandra has met the Queen on about four occasions (she was awarded the CBE in 1997) and she told us exactly what it’s like inside Buckingham Palace – ‘Ooh, there are ever so many rules and regulations, where you have to stand and so on’ Not lovely and laid back like your pad then, Zandra?
What a brilliant evening!
