Stella McCartney’s Winning Kit For London 2012 Olympics: FIRST LOOK

22 March 2012 by

After two years of planning, designing and perfecting: The Kit. Has. Arrived. Yep, the world has just got its first ever glimpse of Stella McCartney’s exclusive Olympic designs for Team GB – and what a sight it is. Grazia is reporting live from the launch at London’s Tower Bridge to bring you a sneak peek of the action. And we can happily report that as well as being the most stylish Olympics and Paralympics kit EVER, there are a few design features that will really set our team apart this summer.

Taking inspiration from the British flag (which Stella describes as ‘the best flag in the world’) and giving it a fashiony edge, Stella has accounted for everything, right down to the smallest of details. 'I made the flag less strident, more delicate, but then of course I had to be careful not to over feminise the men,’ she exclusively told us. The hockey and tennis skirts feature oh-so sweet simple layers, with linings of mesh that peep out below the hems, and even the ladies’ podium jackets have a tie belt – meaning no more shapeless shell suits. On the presentation suits (that’s the outfits they wear for the podium) there’s even an embroidered ribbon trim declaring ‘Only the best for the athletes’.

Stella, the first fashion designer ever to design the Olympic kit, was appointed Team GB Creative Director by sports brand Adidas two years ago. And while there was not a doubt in our minds that it would be oh-so stylish, the award winning designer exclusively told that we might have been looking at a different kit altogether if she’d have let her creative side take over.

‘I started with some crazy ideas: neon fish? Metallic gold? Fluorescent, for God’s sake!’ she told us. ‘But that would have been all about Stella McCartney. That would have been disrespectful to the athletes and to the nation.’

So, what do the athletes make of it? Watch this space to find out, and to see the official kit launch photographs, coming VERY soon…
