Doesn't it seem like only yesterday that Tavi Gevinson took us all by storm with her brilliantly original blog The Style Rookie? At just thirteen years old, the pint-sized blogger's frank fashion musings and dab hand at dressing-up-box chic had landed her spots on umpteen front rows where she was pictured perched next to industry big guns like Anna Wintour, wide-eyed with wonder.
Well, now fifteen, Tavi is a fashion rookie no longer. Since her first uncertain steps in the world of fashion blogging she's come on in leaps and bounds - still as unique as ever, she's now editor-in-chief of her own online magazine Rookie and every fashionista worth her salt wants to know what she's up to! No wonder we were so excited when we saw her new video interview with StyleLikeU - well, it's not every day you get the chance to poke around in Tavi's extensive closet (full of Courtney Love-style kook, mainstream fash must-haves - see that Miu Miu collar - and DIY gems) and get her thoughts on all things fash...
Talking with characteristic openness about her evolution from ingenue to seasoned pro (she dabbled with updating her blog name to Style Pro, dontcha know), she confesses that initially she found all the hype surrounding the fashion industry 'so magical' but now concedes that 'I was coming at it with this very childlike perspective'. Of going to the shows nowadays she admits, 'I'm not going to go to a show where everyone's acting all pretentious and pretend like it's glamorous'. Eeep.
She's now much more engrossed in her latest projects. 'It's important to me that the tone [of Rookie] develops the way I want it to,' she says, and has often talked of her belief that fashion isn't about 'being pretty' but about 'having fun and being expressive' - one look at all her fab collection of trinkets and you can see she's a girl who's as good as her word!
And speaking of latest projects, we were especially excited to hear that the vid may be only the tip of the iceberg. Yep, there is mention of Tavi: The Movie (she'd like to make it with a Freaks and Geeks twist to it). Wowee. We'd be super excited to see that flick, though with such an extensive closet, even three hours might not be enough.
Older, wiser and more savvy she may be but she's every bit the style trailblazer she was at the beginning. Miss Gevinson - we salute you. Watch Tavi talking about her style in the video below and let us know what you think about her take on all things fashion...
