Blue was the colour of the night at the White House State Dinner, to close the Cameron’s official visit to Washington. Samantha Cameron opted for an embellished number by British designer (‘natch) Alessandra Rich, which she paired with heels from good old Next. Meanwhile Michelle Obama complimented the Prime Minister’s wife in a deep teal number by Marchesa.

The First Lady’s choice appeared to be a nod to one of the guests invited to the state dinner – Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, a Brit who was accompanied by her American movie mogul husband Harvey Weinstein. ‘I’m stoked,’ he told Grazia of The First Lady choosing his wife for such an occasion. ‘She’d sent her a dress but she had no idea she was going to wear it.’ Chapman – herself also wearing Marchesa – certainly looked thrilled. ‘I literally found out moments ago as I arrived,’ she revealed, grinning. ‘I’m dying to see her in it but I’m sure she looks amazing because she always does.’ The designer had warm words for Michelle’s counterpart Samantha Cameron, too – saying she admired her chic style.

Indeed it was niceties all round as Chanel-clad US Vogue editor Anna Wintour also diplomatically avoided entering into the ‘fashion battle’ that’s greeted Michelle and Samantha on this trip. ‘They both look great,’ she said with usual dimissiveness on her way into the White House.

Earlier that day Samantha and Michelle had chosen to represent their individual country’s designers at the Welcoming Ceremony in Roksanda Illincic and Zac Posen respectively. Then Samantha changed into a Victoria by Victoria Beckham maroon dress from her latest collection (on loan, she hastened to add) for a visit to The National Children’s Centre. Bet that made VB a little happier about turning down an invite to the White House state dinner because David was playing football in Toronto, then…
