If there’s one person who is unlikely to be found in the aisles of a supermarket, then we reckon it’s probably Karl Lagerfeld. Many things come to mind when one thinks of the outspoken designer, but we’re guessing that ‘supermarket shopper’ is not one of them. And with good reason, it seems; though French Elle have managed to coax Monsieur Lagerfeld into the aisles of a supermarket for a shoot in the new edition of the magazine, to celebrate the launch of his ‘Karl’ line, which famously launched on net-a-porter in January, he reveals in the accompanying interview that ‘it’s the first time I’ve stepped into a supermarket. It’s crazy — fascinating what one can buy. There’s enough here to easily gain 20 kilos’.
So, although in the real world he’s unlikely to be found stocking up on value packs of Diet Coke in the aisles of LIDL, Karl has been snapped running faux-errands for the shoot in Elle, whilst the lovely Saskia de Brauw and Caroline Brasch Nielsen can be spotted behind him rocking some of the sell-out items from the line’s first collection. M Lagerfeld, meanwhile, peruses the aisles for (what we imagine to be) such items as spray-starch for his collars and disposable glass-wipes to keep his enviable collection of sunnies smear-free.
Of course, Lagerfeld HAS been spotted outside of his usual swanky haunts before, (remember this) notably when he was snapped looking uncomfortable with Blake Lively in a diner before the 2011 Met gala (above). But, as he reveals in the interview with Elle, there is another everyday past time he doesn't indulge in – driving. ‘I haven’t driven since I was 18’ he reveals, ‘and that’s a benefit to society because I ended up in a ditch, without knowing why!’
Again, we are kind-of unsurprised.
