Chanel's crystal cuffs v Pamela Love's
Who could forget Chanel’s magnificent Autumn Winter 2012 show that took place during Paris Fashion Week last week. There were bejeweled eyebrows backstage, crystal stalagmites on the catwalk and Katy Perry flirting with Baptiste Giabiconi on the FROW. What you may NOT have noticed were the chunky, crystal-adorned cuffs that the models were showcasing. Take a closer look and a group of beady-eyed bloggers noticed they bear a striking resemblance to accessories produced by New York–based designer, Pamela Love. YIKES.
As Fashionista reported, Love’s cuffs were designed a year before the Chanel show, created for her Autumn Winter 2011 collection. Naturallement, an interweb outcry ensued with copywright accusations being thrown at the French fashion house. DOUBLE YIKES.
But Chanel has spoken – hurrah! ‘It has been brought to our attention that some of the bracelets that appeared in the show may resemble those of another designer,’ a spokesperson told Fashionista. ‘Out of respect for the concerns raised and for the artistic process generally the House has decided not to offer these bracelets for sale as part of the A/W 2012 collection.’
Well, we’re mighty impressed with this outcome. Designers are often inspired by each other and there are many look-a-likes floating around Planet Fashion — remember that debacle Rachel Zoe caused when she was accused of copy-catting, par exemple. So this is a refreshingly ethical decision from a mega brand with that kind of clout - you’d assume Chanel wouldn’t feel the need to respond to such accusations and continue to make whatever they chose. So they're setting a mighty fine example, non?
Oh, and if you’re fretting at the thought of never getting your wrists into such gorgeous cuffs, fear not. You can pick up Pamela Love’s crystal cuffs on her site for approximately £334, which is no doubt cheaper than a Chanel creation. Ah, how we love a happy ending.
