Grazia’s fashion team have been loyal Prabal Gurung fans since the very start. We remember way back in 2009 when his dresses were popping up on the A-list bods of Demi Moore, Carey Mulligan and Rachel Weisz. Then two Michelle Obama moments came and BAM! into the spotlight he was most enthusiastically thrown. Since then the American designer has gone from strength to strength, with his latest A/W’12 show becoming one of NYFW’s hottest tickets and most hyped collections. So naturally, when the offer came for us to catch up with the rather handsome man himself (seriously, that boy is charming) at the CFDA’s Americans in Paris event we almost took off our heels and legged it there barefoot.
After the gorgeous Gurung talked us through his seriously sharp collection, showed us the Fenton and Fallon bug-jewellery collaboration and told us that his blue tinsel-sleeved sweater from the fall line was not for him (“I thought I could pull it off, but I guess not…” he confessed) we quickly moved onto his stellar celebrity following. Whilst he hinted there’s much more to come in that department, it was only the other day that paparazzi-certified Lady Gaga wore a petrol-leather-sleeved black coat straight off the catwalk (and some past-season sunnies that he created with Linda Farrow) to her ‘Born This Way Foundation’ launch at Harvard University, and Prabal certainly wanted to share his excitement with us. “Have you seen this?!” He exclaimed whilst zooming in on a shot of Lady Gaga on his iPad and gesturing wildly, “I had some sort of high-school girl moment. I was like, ‘ahhhhhhh!’” So did he know she was going to wear it? “You never really know when or if it’ll happen after the girls request things,” he explained, “It was the same when SJP turned up on the cover of GRAZIA wearing one of my dresses. I had no idea that it was the cover-shot until the Peter Pilotto boys sent an email to tell me!” Oh Prabal, give us your cell phone number and we’ll keep you posted on a minute by minute basis!
