Remember when Tom Ford lamented the current state of red carpet dressing? ‘No one wants to take any risks,’ he sighed. Then Gwyneth Paltrow stepped onto the Oscar Awards red carpet wearing the designer’s white gown covered in a risk-taking cape – and the fash pack went wild.
It was the world’s first peek at Mr Ford’s Autumn Winter 2012 collection, less than a week after it was shown to select editors in London. He deemed this Vionnet-inspired gown as his favourite because it’s ‘dead simple.’
And now Gwynnie has opened up about the spotlight-stealing gown. While cooking up a storm on The Chew, she says it was the only dress she tried on and daughter Apple ‘weighs in very heavily’ on her red carpet choices. But most brilliantly, the actress reveals she was inspired by Jackie O’s classic style.
‘I thought, “it's a little different but it's sort of a throwback.” I saw a pic of Jackie O in a white dress with a cape and it's been a while since anyone's worn a cape, frankly, except for Superman.’
It certainly transformed Mrs Paltrow-Martin into a goddess-like superwoman. And the Jackie O dress she’s referring to? None other than the chiffon gown that the first lady designed herself and wore to the inaugural ball in 1961.
No doubt this Tom Ford number will prove to be just as timeless.
