Alber Elbaz on Dressing the A-List in Lanvin: 'I Like Fantasy Dresses'

Alber Elbaz is surely the most adorable and cuddliest of fashion designers. In his signature specs, he tells self-deprecating tales of 'the most pathetic birthday I have ever had' (aww!) and charismatically throws some fierce shapes on the dance floor (chortle!). Now, thanks to an interview with WWD to celebrate his 10th anniversary at the creative helm of Lanvin, Monsieur Elbaz has gone and cemented his charmingness once again.

Of course, Alber's wonderful dressmaking skills help the fash pack fall in love with him even more. During the interview, he dishes on designing all those gorgeously swishy gowns. 'A lot of people said they were very romantic. I didn’t see the romantic side of the dresses; I saw the easiness, the simplicity. I saw waking up in the morning and having your kids, and your husband, and your mother on the phone, and your work calling you, that was before the SMS, like 10 years ago, now they do that as well. Women need something a little bit more easy in their wardrobe, instead of thinking every morning what goes with what, they just zip it in and at night zip it out.' Sounds good to us.

Speaking of eveningwear, let's not forget the Israeli-born designer contributed to a magic moment at the Oscar Awards last weekend when Meryl Streep picked up the Best Actress gong wearing his gold lamé draped creation. As if that wasn't exciting enough for one awards season, Emma Stone and Natalie Portman also caused a sartorial stir when they hit the Golden Globes red carpet swathed in Alber's couture-like French elegance, while Tilda Swinton arrived at the SAG Awards in a flowing off-white gown that was minimalist perfection. 'I like the dream, like fantasy dresses,' he says.

So with so many famous friends who wear his confections, from Charlize Theron to Julianne Moore, WWD asks the designer to reveal what the A-list ladies are REALLY like. 'I meet them not during red carpet, not when they are doing a movie,' he says. 'I meet them when they finish shooting or before they start. They always think they will never work again and they are so fragile and so vulnerable and so beautiful and so sensitive and smart, and l love them because I meet them in moments of truth.'

And we're sure, just like us, they love you too. So bring on the Autumn Winter 2012 show tonight, we say! In the meantime, have a scroll through the gallery above to see our favourite Lanvin ladies, from Katie Holmes to Elle Fanning...
