Piers Atkinson to Design Kate Middleton's Diamond Jubilee Hat?

20 February 2012

According to the Mail Online, Kate Middleton is to cement her role as Queen of Hats by commissioning brilliant milliner Piers Atkinson to design a creation for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. It was only a few days ago that Grazia Daily grabbed a chat with the hat designer at London Fashion Week exhibition Headonism, which showcases the best Brit-based hatters, and we wondered if Ms Middleton would be next - but the designer has not yet confirmed either way. If you're not familiar with the Norfolk-born designer, let us refresh your memory…

Yep, Atkinson is more akin to designing wonderfully outrageous creations for stars like Lady Gaga and Sarah Jessica Parker than pretty princesses. Rihanna picked one of his confections for her tour in Israel [above], although we're struggling to see the Duchess in something quite so fiesty... The wacktacular Anna Dello Russo is also a fan of Mr. Atkinson’s work. Who could forget when she sported that cherry fascinator at Paris Fashion Week and set a global headwear trend? Exactly. Plus at New York Fashion Week, Atkinson kitted out Prabal Gurung's catwalk, and there's no forgetting that his gladiatorial creation for Madonna’s mighty performance at the Super Bowl has been an online phenomenon.

Meanwhile, Kate is known as more of a Philip Treacy fan, following in the fashionable footsteps of Victoria Beckham and Cheryl Cole. But now that she's officially Hat Person of the Year, perhaps this is a sign she's really taking her new crown seriously. It's certainly a bold and daring sartorial move and we can't wait to see the results. Pompom headband, anyone?

Kate is expected to wear her Piers Atkinson headgear when she accompanies the Queen and Prince Philip to Leicester for the Diamond Jubilee tour launch. Or when she joins the Queen at upmarket emporium Fortnum & Mason. One thing's for sure, we'll be watching...
