Kate Moss and Rihanna hit Stella McCartney’s magical London Fashion Week party

‘I love magic and that was pretty magic,’ Stella McCartney told Grazia about her mega-cool magician themed presentation of evening wear tonight. ‘We wanted to do something special for London Fashion Week.’ Special it certainly was.

At first glance it was a sedate dinner for Stella and special guests (you know her girlfriends that include Kate Moss and now Rihanna) with one model dressed in her marble-print evening wear on every table. But when the vegetarian food (‘natch, this being Stella) was cleared away the real action began. A gold box… a magician… and, er, Alexa Chung being hypnotised and then levitated on the points of three swords. ‘Yeah I was scared,’ Alexa told Grazia later. ‘But it was either that or do a dance in front of people, so I chose to be hypnotized.’

Sensible girl, that Alexa. Next up on stage was Stella McCartney herself – well, it was her dinner – to perform a card trick with the main man himself. Rihanna, who had made her London Fashion Week debut to sit in between Stella and Kate Moss throughout the dinner, whooped throughout the trick.

But it didn’t last long… Before the crowd knew what to think – surreal was the word most people used to describe the dinner/party/entertainment – the models were up from their seats performing what can only be described as a fashion ballet. Walking across chairs, and dancing on tables, the models showed off their voluminous printed dresses and sleek, almost tuxedo-cut dresses. ‘Stella just said “Come do something different”,’ Stella-faithful model Amber Valetta told Grazia of the performance. ‘We only choreographed it yesterday but it was really fun.’

She’s right. It was really fun. Fun in a way that Stella just seems to instinctively know how to do. Anna Wintour might have dashed off early, but thanks to the endless Belevedere Vodka cocktails when we finally dragged ourselves off the dancefloor the night was still raging. Twiggy was deep in conversation with Jamie Hince, who’d lost his girlfriend Kate Moss to the VVVIP room; Yasmine Le Bon was working some serious dance moves and race was on to get a picture with The Descendents star Shailene Woodley. ‘I’m stoked about the Oscars!’ she told us. ‘I have no idea what to wear so yes I’m always looking for red carpet dresses.’ Well, Shailene. You’d do worse to wear Stella to next Sunday's ceremony....
