Breaking news folks: hours before their Autumn/Winter 2012 catwalk, Mulberry have announced that their new bag is the Del Rey; named in honour of girl du jour, Lana Del Rey. Speaking about the new tote, Mulberry said that it was Lana’s old-school glamour, combined with her sense of fun that appealed to their own desire to mix eclectic playful references with high fashion.
The Del Rey is a simple, chic and (as you might expect) vintagey-classic design. A simple silhouette with twin grab handles, it has the classic Mulberry postman’s lock to the side. Available from May in 'mainline' finishes (Mulberry classics like oak and black buffalo) and as part of the Autumn/Winter collection in a berry coloured black-forest soft matte (immediately above), deer brown grainy print (below), black soft spongy and petrol coloured tanned lambskin (top). The Catwalk Collection also features two new super-luxe leathers, gold large metallic snake print and ink blue sparkle croc print. All of which, we want.
Mulberry Creative Director, Emma Hill said ‘I love Lana’s nostalgic references to bygone glamour and the fact that her look is retrospective yet so modern. This inspired us to create a bag that was timeless, refined and elegant, yet with a beautiful practicality that would suit any woman. We love its perfect proportions and effortless simplicity. As soon as the sketches were completed it felt so familiar, loaded with classic Mulberry heritage DNA.’
And Lana, in response was equally enthusiastic about the design, saying ‘I love the design, a perfect mix between old school Hollywood and contemporary style. It’s an honour that such a classic and prestigious brand would name a bag after me’.
