We Go Backstage at Topshop Unique PLUS Chat to Azealia Banks and Sunday Girl

19 February 2012 by

You know us, we do love a good backstage snoop. And next stop on the agenda was Old Billingsgate Market where the Topshop Unique show was about to begin...

First up, we popped by Camp Beauty where makeup maestro Hannah Murray was creating 'an army of uber-beautiful girls with creamy skin, a nude lip and black eyeliner that is rounded-off so it's not too retro and more minimal'. It worked brilliantly with the boyish, military-inspired clothes that came in rich colours from burgundy to khaki. Yep, this is a far more grown-up collection than we've ever seen from Unique, inspired by Francoise Hardy with a side order, we reckon, of Alexa Chung.

So with the Oscars coming up, what are Hannah's tips for red carpet beauty? 'It's all about the balance of not doing everything at once. With the lashes and the eyes and the lips - sometimes it can be too much, especially if you're all dressed up'. It's hardly surprising, then, that her current beauty crush is Emma Stone. 'I worked with her recently and she's very experimental without trying too hard. I also love Rooney Mara - there's an effortlessness about her.' But deep down, Hannah's all about the French girls, 'like Lea Seydoux and Clémence Poésy.' Oh, to be a Parisian...

With the makeup done and barely-preened hair tucked into the garments, it was time for the models to take their places in the line-up. The likes of Hanne Gaby Odiele were kitted out in classic staples of utility dressing 'reworked for the modern girl'. So there was many an enormous coat, worn with knee-high patent black boots but also feminine separates that softened the look for a more easy-breezy result. For our full show report, click here.

On the front row, we grabbed a chat with girl-of-the-moment Azealia Banks who performed at Karl Lagerfeld's Net-a-Porter dinner last month, remember? 'He really liked my blue hair!' she said excitedly. But it looks like the songstress won't be giving Lady Gaga a run for her wacktacular money any time soon. ‘I don’t have time to get properly fashioned-up’ and so just wears whatever is clean. Sensible girl.

Jade Williams, aka: Sunday Girl, was also on the front row and gave us her top tip for fashion week. 'It might be expensive, but I always hire a cab to ensure I get to the shows on time. I missed Burberry last season and it's still a sore point for me.' Ouch. But fear not, she'll be extra early for the season's show. The songstress was looking gorgeous in a Chanel-esque apricot suit from Topshop teamed with black brogues for that trademark mannish edge. 'I went to the store and had 20 minutes to pick out an outfit, which sounds like a lot of time but when you're running round the shop, it can be stressful!'

Well, this Autumn Winter 2012 collection offered up more than enough choices. Click play on the video below to see every look on the catwalk...
