What HAS Nicki Minaj been up to this week!? Luckily for us she’s bought some welcomed colour and excitement to New York Fashion Week. Things off the catwalk have been perhaps a little dull (eeek…dare we say it!) with other FROW devotees playing it uber safe in comparison to the Superbass singer.
Nicki had a hectic day of promotions on Wednesday (right in the middle of New York fashion week) for her Viva Glam MAC campaign – we’re a tad confused at Grazia - we were sure she swore off all the glitz and glam of the fashion world after her last wacky appearances at the Spring/Summer 2011 shows (remember that multi-coloured bobble dress complete with a foot tall beehive blond wig whilst sitting next to Anna Wintour?). She said shortly afterwards:
'I’m not impressed to be in that world. I’m in my own world. I think sometimes the fashion world isn’t even about clothes anymore; it’s about this ‘in’ crowd, and I’m not into that. I realized more recently that even if it’s for a fashion magazine, I’m not gonna change who I am.'
Yeah! Right on sister! But…then…why so inviting to the attention during the biggest week of the fashion world hmmm…? Well in Ms. Minaj’s defense she is heralding her name to a great cause with MAC. No, not just loving their make-up in general, but their campaign to heighten awareness of HIV and AIDs. Who else could help her do this so flamboyantly but Ricky Livin’ La Vida Loca Martin? It seems the two got on like a house on fire:
'I was blown away by just his humility. He was this big mega-star who I had heard about and seen, and I knew he was...sexy bod and all that... and I’m not thinking that he’s gonna come in and be so humble and down-to-earth. But he had such a pure spirit and that surprised me.'
Ricky returned the compliments right back: ‘Well, she’s just amazing. I love her talent - amazingly sexy. She’s a hard-working woman and she’s doing a beautiful thing. She’s bold and beautiful and that’s the way it should be’ Ok, ok you guys we get the jist!
For the Good Morning America appearance with Ricky, Nicki wore a Mod Colourblock Dress from US High-street chain Forever 21 costing a mere $27.80 – maybe this is her way of shunning the high price fashion world!? Oh – and she accessorized with a blue Chanel bag, obvs.
Later she made an appearance in a MAC store wearing a fitted tee in array of pinks with a bright orange full skirt and gorgeous eye-popping yellow platforms. For the Viva Glam Party at Stage 37 later that evening, which Kelly Osbourne also lended her support to, she changed into a outrageously gorgeous pink and blue Nanette Lepore striped dress complete with matching jacket from her Spring/Summer 2012 collection and Nicki's signature shade of MAC bright pink lipstick.
Nicki admits herself to loving the attention her out-there style gets saying, ‘I like the idea of doing something that everyone else is not. I get high off that. Just the idea that other people don’t have the balls to do something—that’s my thing.’
Well, we think she’s cleverly lent her paparazzi pulling power to a great cause and were personally delighted with another offering from her never-ending sunshine wardrobe. C’mon, it’s definitely an improvement on the red-cardinal cape at the Grammy’s surely!? Let us know what you preferred…
