Rooney Mara and Emma Stone bought some welcome excitement to close New York Fashion Week on the front row yesterday with their appearance at Calvin Klein. All eyes were on the actresses who will both be attending this year’s Oscars on Sunday, 26th February in Hollywood. Of course, the question on everyone’s lips is did they find any inspiration for Oscar worthy dresses at the show?
Once the show had finished they were both seen backstage with Anna Wintour and designer Francisco Costa. Rooney in particular was looking particularly chummy with the long-time Calvin Klein designer as they shared jokes and talked at length while he personally showed her the collection backstage. Not bad. We can’t help but wonder if he might be helping her with a dress for the big event. After all they do seem to be the perfect fit. There can be no doubt that his collection seemed to pull inspiration from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Even his models had Rooney-esque blunt fringe haircuts – along with the blacked out set it appeared he had created a mini Mara army!
The ultra-modern, clean lines that Costa created for the collection seem to be the perfect fit for Rooney who is reknown for her chic, elegant and minimalist style. In Costa’s own words he describes the collection as ‘mysterious, sexy and super urban. The iconography for this is all super modern,’ he sounds as if he could be describing Lisbeth Salander herself. He also used a lot of structured leather looks and if anybody can pull off a leather look sophisticated enough for the awards it would only be Rooney.
Both of the actresses looked stunning for the show – classic and understated yet still show-stoppingly gorgeous. They both opted for mid-length Calvin Klein creations. Rooney was in a black Calvin Klein Collection dress with basket-weave detail at the neckline and her hair in a faultless scraped back up-do. Emma added a splash of colour in a red dropped-waist shift dress with sky-scrapping red heels to match.
Designers will be vying to dress the stars – Rooney has been nominated for Best Actress and Emma, as well as being one of the presenters on the night, will also be in the spotlight as her film The Help is up for Best Picture.
It was only last November when Ms Mara introduced Calvin Klein himself at the Vogue Fashion Fund dinner – we can’t seem to help ourselves in thinking that there is a massive effort being made by the fashion house to get her on side here.
We can’t wait to see what these ladies of the moment decide to go for, watch this space – not long now!
