Ever Wondered How To Pronounce Prabal Gurung Correctly?

15 February 2012 by

Welcome to the wonderful world of fashion pronunciations… You may have noticed yesterday, as part of Grazia’s LIVE issue that Angela Buttolph and Henry Holland had a wee bit of a disagreement over the pronunciation of Prabal Gurung, when Angela went to Henry’s studio to garner his opinions for next week’s fashion jury.

Naturally, the whole of Grazia Towers was sent into a discussion, post-filming about the correct pronunciation of said designer’s name – Pr-Uble? Or PRA-bul? Or something else entirely? Well, we googled; and then we found something utterly brilliant – a fab article on a website called www.sydnestyle.com which is, to all intents and purposes, a big massive long list of designer’s names, alongside each of which is their phonetic spelling. So simple, and yet so brills.

Fashion is full of hard-to-pronounce (and spell) names, and it’s a job in itself to make sure the pronunciations are accurate, lest a testy designer or highly-strung editor smite you down for not knowing how many B’s are in ‘Gabbana’ (2) or how to say ‘Hussein Chalayan’ correctly (Hoo-sane Sha-lion). Just as an example, on any given day a fashion team might have to talk about the likes of Sophia Kokosalaki, Ermenegildo Zegna and Ann Demeulemeester. And thanks to the above site, we can now share with you the knowledge that that list should be pronounced thusly; So-fee-a Ko-ko-sah-lah-kee , Er-men-a-geel-do Zen-ya and Ann DEH-moo-lah-MEE-stera.

Genius, right? Right.

Ooh – and it’s Prub-ble Ger-rung, FYI.
