We've been waiting for this for a while now and at last we can confirm a film about Diana, Princess of Wales is coming to the big screen - and Naomi Watts is set to play her.
The Oscar-nominated actress will portray the final two years of the princess' life in a biopic titled Caught In Flight. According to reports, Diana's romance with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan and Dodi Fayed will feature in the film, as well as her role in campaigning against landmines, before her tragic death in 1997.
'It is such an honour to be able to play this iconic role,' Naomi says of playing the people's princess. 'Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.'
Meanwhile, Oscar-nominated director Oliver Hirschbiegel said:'I am delighted to have such a truly exceptional actress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana.'
So let's discuss the casting choice. Although La Watts moved to Australia in her teens, she was actually born in Kent, England, so there's no need to fret about her nailing the British accent. She's certainly got the same stunning good looks, shiny blonde hair and beautiful blue eyes - but can she capture that Diana charm? The 43-year-old was up for the part against star of The Help Jessica Chastain, who is undeniably captivating, but her American roots would no doubt cause an uproar. Keira Knightley was also reportedly in the running, but at 27, she's a tad too young to play Diana who was aged 36 when she died.
Over on Grazia UK's Facebook page, Deborah 'Sue Ellen' Jane wasn't impressed by the choice, arguing that 'they should have found a new up and coming actress!' Meanwhile, Octavia Holmes asked, 'Why drag it all up again? It will be upsetting for William and Harry. But I guess that doesn't matter to the studios as much as making money.'
One thing's for sure, the costumes are going to be incredible. We're hoping to see such iconic outfits as that figure-hugging ruched minidress from Greek designer Christina Stambolian that Diana wore to the Serpentine Gallery benefit, the Jackie O-inspired pink suit designed by Gianni Versace for a visit to the nation's troops in 1995 and, of course, many a Catherine Walker number. And we can't wait to see Naomi rocking that gorgeously full bouffant.
